Gallery JJ presents an exhibition of drawings by Suh Yongsun, a master of Korean contemporary art, dedicated to his series on King Danjong. Suh has long addressed Danjong's tragic history and broader questions of power, death and memory in Korean history; this show foregrounds drawing — the most direct site of his thinking and the starting point of his paintings.
Inscribed directly on paper, the lines and planes carry the artist's breath and the decisive moments of confronting history. Drawing functions both as a tool for thought underlying his paintings and as an autonomous work in its own right, here reconstructed multidimensionally through the figure of King Danjong.
